When you're planning a photography session, whether it's for your wedding, your family, or just because, you want photos that feel like you. That starts with choosing the right photography style. As a photographer, I've seen firsthand how the right style can change how a session feels. It's not just about the colors or lighting, it's also about the connection you feel with the photographer and how they tell your story.

In this post, I'll walk you through the most common photography styles, how to figure out which one fits you best, and what to look for when hiring your photographer.

Your photographer's style is more than editing. It includes how they shoot, how they pose or don't pose, how they interact with you, and most of all, how the final images feel when you look at them. Remember, you'll be looking at these images when you're old and grey and they should be passed down through the generations. You'll want to feel something when you look back at them.

Some common photography styles include:

  • Light and airy: bright, soft, clean tones. Think lots of natural light, soft colors

  • Dark and moody: rich shadows, warm tones, and a dramatic emotional vibe

  • True to color (me!!): colors that reflect real life. Perfect for those who want natural, classic images

  • Documentary / candid (also, me!): real moments, with little to no posing. Ideal for storytelling and genuine connection

  • Fine art / editorial: often lots of posing, dramatic. Perfect for huge, luxury weddings

It's also important to note that some photographers may use two styles, like me. My editing style is very true to color, but I also try to capture as much candid and true moments as possible. I do pose some during bride and groom portraits on a wedding day, but other than that, I really try to capture the day / session as it was!

So how do you know which one is right for you? Start with this: what kind of photos make you pause? Are you drawn to soft images or ones with more contrast? Do you prefer direction when posing or would you rather have a more go with the flow approach?

When choosing your photographer, try to dig a little deeper than just the Instagram highlights. Photographers will only post their best work. Ask for a full gallery to view instead! Look at how they capture emotion, movement, and details.

You're not just hiring someone to take your photos, especially when it comes to weddings. You're inviting someone into your world to capture you in a way that feels honest and true to you. The style and photographer you choose will influence how you feel during your session / wedding day. As a photographer, my biggest goal is for you to feel seen, safe, and loved. Whether that's through natural light and gentle guidence or more of a documentary hands off approach. I want your images to reflect you.

If you're not sure where to start, that's okay! Reach out to any photographers you're interested in and ask any questions you may have. Share your vision with them and ask them if they think you'd be a good fit. Most great photographers will recommend someone else if they don't feel like they could make your vision come to life. A good photographer should never pressure you into booking. At the end of the day, the right photography style is the one that makes you feel something.
